Santa Claus Address: Where to Mail Your Letter to the North Pole
The official Santa Claus address in the United States is Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888. The Postal Service collects every letter sent there for USPS Operation Santa, and for 2026 the letter needs to be postmarked by December 5.1
What surprises many parents: an Operation Santa letter doesn't get an automatic reply. Volunteers “adopt” letters online and send gifts, but there are always more letters than adopters. If your child is counting on a letter back, there are better options.
Below you'll find every address to copy, the 2026 dates, the trick for getting a real North Pole, Alaska postmark, the small Indiana town whose elves answer every letter, and the addresses in Canada and Finland.
Santa Claus address in the USA: 123 Elf Road
Write this on the front of the envelope, centered, just like any other letter:
123 Elf Road
North Pole, 88888
USPS accepts these letters from the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.1 The program goes back to 1912, when Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock first allowed postal workers and ordinary citizens to answer letters addressed to Santa.2 Since 2017 letters have been scanned and posted online, and in 2020 the program went nationwide for the first time.2
Your family's privacy is protected: before a letter goes online, last names, addresses and other personal details are removed, and the people who adopt letters never see them.3
USPS Operation Santa: key dates for 2026
| Date (2026) | Operation Santa milestone |

| November 2 | Registration opens for people who want to adopt letters |
| November 16 | Adoption opens: volunteers can pick single or family letters |

Dates as announced by USPS in September 2026.14 New letters are added online throughout the season, but USPS is clear that there's no guarantee a letter will be adopted.1
How to address a letter to Santa: 6 tips
- Use the full address. Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888, centered on the front of the envelope.4
- Add your child's first and last name and full return address. Without it, nobody can send anything back.4
- Put a stamp on the front. A regular First-Class stamp is all it needs.4
- Write clearly. Postal elves read thousands of letters, so neat handwriting helps.4
- List wishes in order, with details. Sizes, colors and the exact toy make it easier for an adopter to say yes.4
- Mail early. The 2026 postmark deadline is December 5. Letters that arrive earlier have more time to be seen and adopted.1
Where to send a letter to Santa if you want a reply
Operation Santa is a giving program first, so the reply depends on a stranger adopting the letter. These are the options at a glance:
| Option | Address | Who writes back | Stamp |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Operation Santa | 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888 | A volunteer may adopt the letter and send gifts (not guaranteed) | Yes, on the front |
| North Pole postmark | 4141 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, AK | You do: your own reply comes back with a North Pole, Alaska postmark | Yes, inner and outer envelope |
| Santa Claus, Indiana | P.O. Box 1, Santa Claus, IN 47579 | Volunteer elves, every letter with a return address | Yes |
| Canada Post | North Pole, H0H 0H0, Canada | Canada Post elves, in the language of the letter | International postage from the US |
The North Pole, Alaska postmark trick
There really is a town called North Pole in Alaska, about 1,600 people near Fairbanks, with candy-cane light poles and streets like Santa Claus Lane.5 USPS runs a program that lets you send your child a reply from Santa with an official North Pole postmark.6 Here's how it works:
- Your child writes the letter to Santa.
- You write Santa's reply and put it in an envelope addressed to your child, with “Santa, North Pole” as the return address and a First-Class stamp.
- Put that envelope (plus your child's original letter) into a larger Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope with postage and mail it to:6

Anchorage, AK 99530-9998
The postmaster in Anchorage stamps your reply with the North Pole postmark and sends it back to your child. In 2019 the letters had to arrive in Anchorage by December 13.6 USPS hadn't announced the 2026 cutoff when we last checked, so plan to mail it by early December.
Santa Claus, Indiana: the town whose elves write back
Santa Claus is also a real town in southern Indiana, and since 1914 its post office has been answering letters to Santa.7 Today a volunteer group called Santa's Elves replies to every letter that includes a return address.8 In 2015 they answered more than 22,000 letters, over 2,000 of them going to children abroad.9

Where does Santa live?
In American tradition Santa lives at the North Pole. The idea was popularized by the cartoonist Thomas Nast in his Harper's Weekly drawings.12 That's why North Pole appears in the US and Canadian Santa addresses.
Finland disagrees, of course: there, Santa lives in Lapland, and visitors meet him in Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle.11 On Christmas Eve, you can follow his route with our Santa tracker. And if your child has started asking tricky questions, read Is Santa real? first.

Can my child email Santa instead?
The USPS programs work with paper letters. If the deadlines have passed or you want Santa to answer by name, a personalized video message from Santa is a quick alternative.
